Nevada Department of Education & OER Project Social Studies Teacher Professional Learning Series

The Nevada Department of Education Social Studies leadership and OER Project believe that teachers are the key to providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead our country into the future. In that spirit, we are collaborating this year on a series of workshops for teachers looking to add a few new tools to their toolbox. Developing students’ skills in any social studies classroom is imperative to understanding the content. These sessions will dive deep into a particular skill and leave you with ideas and tools that can be implemented immediately in your classroom.  OER Project team members will collaborate with the Nevada Department of Education to design each session with your needs in mind. We are excited to begin this partnership and look forward to learning together throughout the school year.

Session 2: Amping Up Argumentative Writing: Making Strong Claims – October 26, 2022, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. MT

What should we believe? How do we know that what we are reading is a reliable source? To create a solid argumentative writing piece, learners must understand how to develop worthwhile claims. We delve into the world of making and testing claims with students as they begin the writing process. Come along and learn how a few engaging claim testing activities can serve as a springboard for your student’s writing.
