Evidence and Reasoning

How to be the GOAT at Evidence and Reasoning

Nate Otey

Thank you Mr. Otey for three great ideas about how to teach this important history skill.  The triangle structure is something that my department has focused on.  The idea of no surprises and holding hands seem really useful.  Has anyone else approached the skill this way or what do you do?

  •   This holding hands rule is such a great way to show students how to use evidence to support their claim. That reasoning piece is so tricky to teach to my sophomores since they do not have a social studies course their freshman year and this strategy is perfect for helping them to see how to connect their claim, evidence, and support. Thank you so much for sharing! I will be using this in my class this year.

  • Jessica - Reasoning is tricky indeed! I'm so glad you found this technique valuable, and please let me know if I can be of service in any way as you implement it with your sophomores!
