Assessing Historical Thinking Through the Stories of the Fallen

Shane Gower
Social Studies Teacher
Readfield, Maine

By using authentic inquiry to engage students, teachers can find relevance and purpose in the classroom to assess historical thinking. In this talk, teacher Shane Gower from Maranacook Community High School (Readfield, ME), explains how his students develop historical thinking skills through scaffolding by telling the stories of the Fallen from the Second World War. He uses inquiry to peak student interest for telling these stories of real soldiers killed in battle from the local community. He also discusses using resources from the Stanford History Education Group, National History Day, and the American Battle Monuments Commission to support this work.
