I've taught my kids to ""evlauate" sources, to discern whether they're "reliable" or "credible." One of the panelists used a much more accessible and salient term:  "Can I trust this?" That makes it a personal question for kids and one they immediately understand. Trust is something that matters to them.

I find that my students tend to oversimplify the idea of reliability. I have to model how to ground their evaluation in the skills of contextualization and corroboration. They tend to revert to a document being biased and stop their thinking there. Have you experienced any issues like that?

Janette Schroeder I *definitely* have experienced this. I'll point you to the approach that Nick Dennis discusses in his Track Talk and in this thread.

This sounds like something Bain, Bob would have addressed. It's of utmost importance that students *eventually* understand why they believe what they do...and why they hold on to those beliefs. If you haven't seen it, the How Do We Decide What to Believe? video is an amazing exploration into this idea.
