Teaching History in a Culture War: Origin Story as Identity

The current fight over the teaching of history is a new chapter of the American cultural wars. Many teachers are working in states that have or are seeking to limit the content of social science classrooms on issues of race and gender. The fight is currently framed as a battle over teaching the "true" history of the United States. This talk seeks to reframe the debate as a fight over a shared origin story that threatens identity and offers guidance on how to use previous curriculum battles to teach about this moment.
