Scale model of the Solar System

Laura Massa

After watching the video "To Scale: The Solar System" I organized my students to represent the solar system on scale using the football field. Next time I would like to incorporate comets that move across the field. An aerial view from a drone would be ideal to show the dimensions of the scale, but unfortunately I don't have one. How do you represent the solar system on scale? Do you introduce any variation to this one? I would love to learn how other teachers do it.

After a rainy fall, we had a teacher complete the scale of the solar system in the hallways. They started at a common point (the front attendance office), and then marked it out with masking tape on the floor in a heavily trafficked hallway. So many students and teachers stopped along the way to read where they were in the scale of our solar system!

Rachel Hansen , I love this! It would be super fun to have different color tape to represent each area.

Laura Massa  I have done this activity, too, on our school's soccer field.  I have made some changes with how I think about scale with students.  We have taken our chalk and marked up scale to show the history of life.  It is a fun activity, sometimes with much walking.

Gregory Dykhouse Your comment reminds me of this cool video I use with my students to demonstrate how long it took for life to evolve into complex entities.

Laura Massa fantastic lesson idea for Earth & the Solar System.  I forgot about this resource that we have at our local community college.  They have created a scale model of the solar system walking tour on their campus.  Need to try to get the students out there for a little solar trek.

This year I asked my school's technology department to bring a drone to get a bird's eye view of the solar system on scale using the football field. We did it after we watched the video and reflected on it. I gave students small models of each planet and celestial body and one student represented a comet traveling through the solar system to approach our sun. Here is the video.
