Scale model of the Solar System

After watching the video "To Scale: The Solar System" I organized my students to represent the solar system on scale using the football field. Next time I would like to incorporate comets that move across the field. An aerial view from a drone would be ideal to show the dimensions of the scale, but unfortunately I don't have one. How do you represent the solar system on scale? Do you introduce any variation to this one? I would love to learn how other teachers do it.

  • After a rainy fall, we had a teacher complete the scale of the solar system in the hallways. They started at a common point (the front attendance office), and then marked it out with masking tape on the floor in a heavily trafficked hallway. So many students and teachers stopped along the way to read where they were in the scale of our solar system!
