Scale model of the Solar System

After watching the video "To Scale: The Solar System" I organized my students to represent the solar system on scale using the football field. Next time I would like to incorporate comets that move across the field. An aerial view from a drone would be ideal to show the dimensions of the scale, but unfortunately I don't have one. How do you represent the solar system on scale? Do you introduce any variation to this one? I would love to learn how other teachers do it.

  • This year I asked my school's technology department to bring a drone to get a bird's eye view of the solar system on scale using the football field. We did it after we watched the video and reflected on it. I gave students small models of each planet and celestial body and one student represented a comet traveling through the solar system to approach our sun. Here is the video.
