Blue Marble Scale Model Activity Ideas

Hey Everyone!

I love using this video as part of our discussions of the concept of scale early in the course!

Prior to beginning, I utilize a digital microscope to look at every day objects close up, and we discuss the essential question:

”What can learn about an object by looking at it close up and far away?”

After the video and discussion, we have students select an object themselves to look at using three different perspectives and describe the key data each perspective gives them.

if you utilize this video, how have you incorporated it into your classroom activities?

Brad Vonck I use this video and love it as well as my students. They are mesmerized to learn that all the representations of our solar system are not in scale. I introduce the concept of scales at the beginning of the year when we talk about the Big Bang and the universe.

I use the video before we represent the solar system on a football field. I attached the visual representation of the activity and students distribution on the field. PDFI explain that according to scale, the Oort Cloud would be located near Boyton Beach, FL (my school is located in Miami, FL). Before we go to the field, each student has to choose a planet or celestial body in our solar system and share one peculiarity with the class.

This video is a must watch for Big History.  Opens up a big discussion on just how large the universe really is.  That's a giant first step in getting kids to understand how complex life is.
