What I am looking at, and we start on Monday a new semester, is getting from Prehistory and the shift from Hunting and Gathering to Agriculture to Agriculture Civilization all in January, with the Museum Project in there to allow students the option to cover more civilizations then we will zoom in on in class. So that is about 20 lessons, including two days for assessment. By 2/18, I will be at the Mongols and Crusades. (I am doing Origins World History and NOT Big History, though.) 

This is a good plan Drew Fortune I am exploring other colleagues' planning options because timing is an essential part of our work. Even though I teach Big History, I will transition from foraging to agriculture by emphasizing its drawbacks and benefits. Do you teach the steps humanity took toward agriculture? I use the video Humanity's Transition to Farming, which was previously available on the OER platform. It highlights the five stages of agriculture. I find this video useful for explaining that the transition to farming didn't happen all at once, as many students tend to think. 

Hi Laura! I've never done the Museum Project but I just took a look and it looks fun! With 3 classes of World History (about 80 kids) I probably wouldn't have a physical museum but I am envisioning a digital museum where students have one slide to create their "exhibit" (maybe in small groups?) and, once submitted, they could be put together to create the museum. I'd probably design a template slide to look like a room and they could add pictures, links, and captions to their exhibit items. I'm also envisioning some sort of end assignment like a scavenger hunt that would ask students to look at everyone's exhibit.

I realize I haven't answered your question so thank you for allowing me this space to "think aloud"! BUT in answer to your question about the timing--I think you could make it a fairly quick, 1-2 day check in or a lengthier project if you were looking for polish and depth.

ERIN CUNNINGHAM you are so creative and resourceful! Creating a digital museum exhibit is such a brilliant idea, especially when time is limited. Using a background template of a room adds a great touch of realism—fantastic work!

I have a question about the scavenger hunt: Do you use a specific platform to design them and streamline the process? If so, would you be willing to share some examples?

I typically allocate a months worth of time for this unit. I also use the Museum Project to set a nice base for the unit. I then grow beans with my class to simulate a bit of agriculture in my classroom. I do this alongside reading excerpts of Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. I find that once I hit this unit in BHP I am always looking for new resources to use- there always seems to be a new book I could use or new fun activities to try out. I guess for me- I try to enhance and extend what has already been taught in their Global History classes and not just repeat the content they have already been taught.

 Adriane Musacchio your project growing beans inspired me to try something more modest. I have a serious time constraint due to my students traveling to the Everglades for a week. I will share my results when I have them.

When I've done collaboration digitally, we usually just use Google Slides. I may push out a template slide to Google Classroom and then students make a copy then share with their groupmates and me. I then assemble the completed slides into a master slide deck that I reshare (view-only) with the class.
