As I plan for Semester II in Big History, I am considering how many classes to devote to the study of agriculture and early civilizations. In particular, I am identifying the fundamental, must-teach topics to include. Each of my classes lasts 60 minutes, and this unit will include the Museum Project. I am thinking about dedicating 20 class periods to cover this unit. How many classes do you usually spend on it? And for those who teach Big History, do you include the Museum Project as well? I typically allocate a months worth of time for this unit. I also use the Museum Project to set a nice base for the unit. I then grow beans with my class to simulate a bit of agriculture in my classroom. I do this alongside reading excerpts of Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. I find that once I hit this unit in BHP I am always looking for new resources to use- there always seems to be a new book I could use or new fun activities to try out. I guess for me- I try to enhance and extend what has already been taught in their Global History classes and not just repeat the content they have already been taught.

Adriane Musacchio your project growing beans inspired me to try something more modest. I have a serious time constraint due to my students traveling to the Everglades for a week. I will share my results when I have them.
