Teaching about Levels of Development

Laura Massa

I came across this powerful video that explains global development is in a visual and easy-to-understand way. I use it with my 9th grade students in Big History when we explore the Gapminder Dollar Street website, but it is applicable to other courses on the OER platform. The website it comes from offers rich information and compelling statitscs, and it pairs especially well with discussions around the  UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Highly recommend checking it out!

Laura Massa , thanks for the share! I'm quickly approaching the final unit of WHP Origins so I will have to add it to my lessons on the Sustainable Development Goals.

On a side note, I've found the Council on Foreign Relations to be a helpful resource for teaching about modern slavery. This multimedia exploration is powerful and provides ample opportunities for classroom use. When time allows, I've used it as an extension of my lessons on the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Wow ERIN CUNNINGHAM ! This is a powerful site with compelling visuals and case studies from different countries, including the U.S. It will be a meaningful activity to help students connect slavery in the past to its modern forms. It reminds me of the work of Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, who fights to end child slavery in India and around the world.

Did you use the multimedia features? How did your students respond to the concept of modern slavery?

Excellent!  Thanks Laura for sharing.  This video is a perfect addition to the project, short enough to keep student interest with helpful animations.

I haven't used the full playlist in a few years but this is what I used in the past for modern slavery. Here's the culminating written response assignment.
