I've been reading through some of the things my 6th graders came up with as examples of scale-switching, and I'm just thrilled with the variety of ideas they came up with. Thought I would share a few here. We've had some really fantastic discussions around this concept, and I think the kids are genuinely aware of why this skill is so useful in history and life!...
- Planning a trip (the window of time you have, how you break up travel time on a road trip, what you will do day-by-day)
- Plotting things on a map (zooming out to orient yourself)
- Mapping out a timeline for a long-term project
- Considering how to use the final 5 seconds of a basketball in order to ensure a victory (Do I foul and send them to the free throw, and then get a chance to make a shot?)
- Even an SEL connection! (I got the last fudge at a hometown fair carnival and I was so excited, but then I started thinking about all of the people there who may not get one!)
Just a handful, but wow, when you elicit connections for this type of thing, it really helps the kids connect!
