Loving the New Big History Videos—Anyone Else?

Laura Massa

This year my colleague and I have been using the new Big History videos for every threshold. These are the original videos narrated by Dr. David Christian, but now shorter, more condensed, and enhanced with excellent imagery that helps students better visualize key concepts. They arrived at just the right time, as the older versions often felt too long and lecture-heavy.

The new videos are about six minutes each and incorporate photographs, maps, and short video clips. What I especially appreciate is how they are structured around central topics, beginning with an essential question displayed on the screen. The music sets the rhythm and helps capture students’ attention from the start.

They have been a great success in the classroom. Has anyone else used them? Meaghan Mihalic Eric Schulz ERIN CUNNINGHAM

Hi Laura Massa , I haven't used the new BIG History videos yet but I have liked the reformatted Origins unit videos. I like that they start with a story about a teenager or young person from the era we're about to study. They're good hooks!

I am in this same place.  The new Origins videos take unique angles.  The one for the industrial revolution is about fashion.  Cool way to start a unit that focuses so much on textiles.

Yes, Laura Massa I have been enjoying the videos for Big History, too! The graphics are engaging, the length is just-right (Yay, Goldilocks!), and the way they have an outline of sorts with the subheadings is really helpful.
