Hunter Gatherer Menu exemplars

As we wrap up Unit 6, our students really love to complete the Hunter-Gatherer Menu Activity. For this activity, we turned it into an actual "menu" project where students create a full menu for their restaurant. We let them loose with the project this mid-week, and the results were fantastic. It was amazing to see how much effort and engagement they put into this project, especially since they had to power through Investigation 6 earlier in the week.

Zachary Cain, these are amazing menus! Can you share how you structure this with your middle school students? What resources do you have them use?

A few years ago, Hayden Brown shared a PowerPoint for the Hunter-gatherer menu. We took that information and then turned it into the hands-on menu project that we have been using with our kiddos for the last few years. I have attached the document that we give the students in terms of structuring the project.

Thanks for the shout out Zachary Cain. Those menus look incredible. I also love this activity, the kids get so into it, the learning if fantastic.. I have included my original W/S and PP from 2017. I have a draft that I hope to expand on this year maybe for the mid year Parent night, which the Hunter gather menus become pop up food stalls for the parent night. I will look to get the catering students on board through the home economic department.

We were thinking something along the same lines. Possibly like an episode of Chopped, where we give them a Paleolithic basket of ingredients and they have to come up with a dish using all of the ingredients. We were also talking about doing a version of Beat Bobby Flay or "Beat Mr. Cain".

Love this project! We are doing it in a week or two. Always a big hit! We are thinking about having kids bring in samples of their menu items. We shall see!
