Short activitivity to show how flexibile our language is and how difficult collective learning would have been for our non sapien ancestors.

Step 1: As a class, choose 200 random words. (I had 15 kids choose 14 words each)

Step 2: Answer the following questions using only the words listed:

1. How should we try to kill that mammoth?
2. Explain why you should marry me.
3. Give directions for a simple task.
4. Come up with a plan to improve our cave.
5. Describe a physical landscape.
6. Come up with your own question!

With 36 kids in a class I switched it up a bit. I had groups of four go up to white board and each kid had to write 5 unique words. After the 5 questions I told them they each had to write a story or a poem. I got 1 epic poetry slam!

Rocky Mountain would love to play. We will start Unit 6 three or four days after you but can totally make it work. I have a class full of 8th graders. If memory serves me correctly, you are also teaching at the middle level? This activity is a favorite every year and I think my kids would love being a pen pal.

Definitely, I will have to wait until after the holiday break but the kids will have a blast writing emails and hopefully learn something too.
