I thought the Course Pathways that were shared during the Climate Project Planning Session were really helpful. I’m not teaching the semester long course by itself but I plan to integrate most of the materials in my geography class. The course pathways helped me decide how to chunk the information and where to add it throughout the year.
This is what I am thinking for the start of the year. I swapped the order of some of the activities to facilitate more discussion as students get to know each other and also to hear more of my students’ thoughts on climate change. My students also have a pretty strong foundation in claim testing & data exploration skill, so I don’t need to spend a long time reviewing those. We have 90 minute blocks, so these two days would be more like a week’s worth of lessons.
Day 1:
- What does climate change mean to you?
- 1.1 Claim Cards
- What is climate change? Video
- Eunice Foote Graphic Biography
- HW: Data Exploration - How do we know Climate Change is Real?
Day 2:
- Elevator Pitch using Gwen Duralek 's counterclaim starters
- Understanding Climate Change Disagreement (I was thinking of changing this into a myth/fact activity instead of using the full article, but I haven’t come up with anything yet.)
- A Case for Optimism Video
- The Need for Climate Optimists (Teacher Led Discussion rather than student reading)
- Inspiring Action Activity
I plan to save 1.4 on International Climate Goals for when we start talking about international organizations.
I would love to get some feedback to hear what everyone thinks! Am I planning too much? And is anyone else planning to attend Creating Climate Champions on the 28th?
