Here is a resource for the Grand Challenges video

Link to the "Five Grand Challenges" video:

“The Five Grand Challenges”  are categories OER uses for how most of the carbon emissions occur around the globe. Whether you teach a climate-related class, or you're just looking for a way to spark interest in climate education, you should take a look at this outstanding video!

I've pasted some questions with time stamps below that you might use in a document or a slide.

Do you think these are the best questions to ask? Would you re-word them or choose other questions entirely?

01:05 What are the five Grand Challenges?

01:53 Why would some consider How We Plug In to be the most important Grand Challenge?

06:33 What’s the simple fact about concrete production that makes the How We Make Things challenge so daunting?

08:40 Why does raising livestock create so much greenhouse gas emissions?

11:27 Why do we use fossil fuels to move people and stuff around?

13:16 Why is demand for air conditioners and heaters expected to rise in the future?

Donnetta Elsasser thank you for sharing this powerful video. Since I don't teach the Climate Project I didn't know about its existence. I like the questions but I would also add a graphic organizer or infographic for students to summarize the main points. I would love to exhibit them in my classroom. This will be a great resource to my Big History and AP Human Geography courses.

Thanks for the feedback, Laura Massa .

OER has a Grand Challenges infographic. Tell me what you think of it, please!

Also, I made a post this evening on how to use only a unit, or a few lessons of the Climate Project if your goals are to include Climate Education, but you don't have space or time for a full course.

Are you looking for a Climate Quickie?

Hope lots of people check it out. I'd love to start a new discussion about this!

Thanks for starting the conversation, Donnetta!

I’m starting to ramp up for the Climate Project once the AP exam is over, so I’ve been going back to some of the materials to line them up.

I like starting with the Grand Challenges too, and last year, besides the infographic, I used the breakdown as a Gallery walk around my classroom and had students start asking questions and then brainstorm some possible solutions.  Those brainstorms were the impetus for them to choose one solution to pursue. I’m definitely going to use the video too… thanks for sharing the timestamps and questions!
