Let’s look at the “Intro to Climate Change” pathway in the Climate Project

These three lessons are a great way to integrate some climate education into almost any class you are already teaching.

In the “Intro to Climate Change Pathway” Introduction to Climate Change Lesson Plan  each lesson is very well laid out, with links to all resources.

What I like best about the first lesson is the closing activity, “Elevator Pitch”. After an opener, a video, and an infographic, students develop a one-minute explanation in their own words to explain “What is Climate Change?” It is a creative activity that also hints at a way for students to take civic action.

CP 1.1.7 Closer - Climate Change Elevator Pitch

My Lesson Two favorite is “The Impacts of Climate Change”. It differentiates between “direct” and “indirect” impacts, and why we should know the difference. https://www.oerproject.com/OER-Materials/OER-Media/PDFs/Climate/Unit-2/The-Impacts-of-Climate-Change?share=embed&fromlesson=true

Something I think is a “must do” for the third lesson is the article “How Can We Take on Climate Change?”  It discusses “mitigation”-- trying to cut down and eliminate the causes, vs. “adaptation”-- how we try to reduce the impact of climate change we already experience.

Have you tried any of these lessons? What did you think?

What else do you like from this Pathway in the Climate Project?

The elevator pitch from the first one you posted is something that I use as well and it's such a vital skill. One of the biggest issues that I see in battling climate change is that students and honestly all of the general public seems barely aware of exactly why climate change is even happening, although they are living its impacts every day. This needs to be knowledge as common as your alphabet or counting to 100.

Freda Anderson , I cannot disagree!

Something I like about how OER approaches Climate Education is just that-- it seeks to educate students about climate so that they have a basis from which to think about problems and/or solutions.

If any of you have a chance to buddy up with a science teacher I highly recommend it. You might not have time to do common planning or coordinate units, but there are still important and easy things you can do.

    • Ask science questions for a non-science person explanation
    • Mention to your students that you and Mr/Ms _____ were talking about__________ (students are in awe of that one!)
    • Talk about the "history of science" and refer students to ___________ to learn more about the intricacies of the scientific concepts. (students actually start asking questions on their own volition!)

I love this idea and it also builds solidarity and camaraderie between colleagues.
