Climate project initial introduction

Robert Aldrich
Robert Aldrich 5 months ago

Does anyone have a great introduction Powerpoint on Climate Change?  I just got the OK from my admin to teach a short unit (4 days) on the Climate project, but I have exactly 2 days to get it planned.  I want to knock it out of the park, so I can expand it next year

Robert Aldrich , I am so sorry I am just seeing this!

I hate it when I ask a timely question and I don't get a response!

If you have time, would you please tell us how it went?

What did you end up planning?  Did you knock it out of the park?

I pulled together a nice introductory Google Slides presentation explaining the difference between Global Warming and Climate Change.  It included a brief overview of the history of Global Warming and CO2 emissions, Human impact, and why climate and weather are different.  This took them into a class-long activity the next day, where they explored their own personal/family ecological footprint.  I finished with a 3rd day where the students chose to explore 3 of 8 ways they can help reduce their impact on our planet.  I didn't knock it out of the park, but I hit the wall.  I have been permitted to teach my new elective next year, "The World on Edge," where I will be hitting topics like climate change, deforestation, pollution, and other global issues that will impact students' futures.

Robert Aldrich , This sounds like you easily got a triple out of this!!

This sounds like an informative and productive 3 days.

For your last day when students got to choose 3 of 8, where did you get the options? How did you present them to the students?

I'm sorry I wasn't any help when you were planning, but I'd really like to learn from you now!

I put together 8 areas that I thought would impact them the most as they moved into adulthood.  I presented it to them as a mini-research or WebQuest with a purpose (I call them).  I gave them many potential websites to look into, or they could find their own.  I then gave them a template for recording their website, the question they are answering, and 4 informational questions (1 on data, 1 to summarize the potential issue, 1 to summarize current efforts, and 1 to reflect on what they can currently do to help lessen the impact)

Robert Aldrich I love, love, love this!

Is it too much to ask for you to share the slides/directions that you used?

In fact, if you are willing, I'd love to see the launch for the whole four days! I can see myself using this with my students.

     Robert Aldrich

Don't worry about making it fancy and/or polished. Just seeing how you laid it out for your students, and how you paced your days will be SO helpful!

    THANKS!

Sorry to have missed your question when you posted it but besides the great resources here in the OER Climate Project, there is a lot of useful stuff online. I was just thinking of tweaking my own slideshows and stumbled upon this - https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/our-changing-climate-a-climate-change-presentation

In the past the NASA Climate website has been very useful. During 2016-2020 it was not as available as it had been previously due to changes in federal leadership but it appears to still be working as of now. If they take it away again, perhaps it can still be accessed through the Wayback Machine or other internet archive resources.
