New Global Issues Class discussion

Robert Aldrich
Robert Aldrich 1 month ago

Over the summer, I will be redesigning my Climate elective into a new course format. My new semester-long course will be titled “The World on Edge: Exploring Global Issues.”
The course will focus on key global challenges, including climate change and global warming, population growth and carrying capacity, global poverty, human trafficking, pollution, and human rights issues such as racism.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you may have—whether related to content, engaging activities, or resources for these topics. I’m also very open to ideas for additional topics that would strengthen the course.
Thank you in advance for your input!

Hi Robert Aldrich , what a cool course! The climate course has lots of materials that would fit really well within this scope.

I would suggest starting with the Course Guide, which will offer the highest level overview of materials and approach. The Course Pathways document also offers some good suggestions for routes through the material.

I definitely recommend starting with Lesson 1.1 Understanding Climate Change for the essential background information. Based on the topics you listed, I also suggest checking out Lesson 2.3 Indirect Impacts of Climate Change, Lesson 3.2 Climate Change Adaptation, and Lesson 4.4 A Climate Future.

If you want to talk in more depth, you can book some time here to discuss in more detail specific content, strategies, or questions. Excited to hear how things go!

Robert Aldrich your new course sounds similar to the content covered in AP Human Geography. Did you explore it?

Sounds pretty cool and there's a lot of opportunity for students to research current topics and let the course update itself as you go along.

There are a lot of great resources here.  The Zinn Education Project has a lot of really useful stuff.

Obviously since you've landed here at the OER project, I'm sure you've discovered all the amazing resources that can be found here as well.

Robert Aldrich , I second Laura Massa 's idea! The AP Human Geography CED covers several of the ideas your mentioned. Definitely check it out!
