What would planets look like on our skyline?

I have never been a fan of making models of the solar system because there is no way you can make a model large enough to see at the proper scale of distance. Thus, it sort of warps students' understanding of the vastness of our solar system-- let alone comprehension of the universe!

But I ran across these images not too long ago that really do make an impression.

If the planets were as close to Earth as the moon is, what would they look like on the skyline? Check out Saturn and Jupiter below!

Ha. Those are great.  Certainly seems like something my students would get a kick out of.  I actually think they work nicely as a good hook into a lesson.  Simply share the images and have students take a guess at what they are supposed to represent. Seems like it could be a fun conversation. Thanks for sharing Donetta.

These are awesome images Donnetta Elsasser ! I agree with you Todd Nussen ! These would work great as a hook - I plan on saving these images to use for next year. Would work great as a motivation activity before the To Scale: The Solar System video (another one of my favorites). The creators of that video would LOVE these images!
