History of me...but make it visual!

History of Me is a great way to introduce students to historical thinking skills! Here are a few techniques that I use to make it work for my middle school students:

  • I provide a template with one Google Slide where students come up with three thresholds for their own lives. They add images and personalize them however they want. Once they are posted, they are a great way to community build and find connections at the start of the year!
  • I ask students to brainstorm a threshold moment that happened before they were born that had an effect on their lives today. Then, they write these moments on speech bubbles, which I will add to the personal timelines (probably as a border).

As you use the activity “History of Me”, what are some strategies that work with your students?

Parents

  • I love this activity! Not only is it fun for students, but it also helps me get to know my students better! I like having my students do a free write for 10 minutes. I tell them to write the story of their lives with all the “big moments”. I then have students raise their hand if they included certain things in their stories like their family, friends, time in elementary school, middle school, high school, college, made mention of their parents, grandparents, ancestors from 100 years ago, 1000 years ago. Usually I get looks from around the classroom at that point, but it does help students realize  they can include the past and future in their timelines.

    i then assign the timeline part for homework and they hand in the threshold timeline the next day.
