Hi all,
I just went through the Unit 2 DBQ with my 9th graders and wanted to share how I did it.
Day 1: Causation (note: the student below split the effects into 3 columns for space-related issues)
The exit ticket for the lesson before this one asked students to submit 2 causes and 2 effects of farming so I took their responses and cut and pasted them into a slide. This cut down on some of the mental load of using the causation tool.
They then turned this tool into a paragraph which would become their contextualization paragraph on day 3!
Day 2: Modified Document Packet (last year students completed the written response on paper so a lined version is on here)
We completed pp. 1-3 together, then they worked with partners, and completed any remaining document analysis for homework.
Day 3: DBQ Written Response Template
We went through the claim writing tool together and I modeled for students how to introduce evidence. The who, what, where, etc. section of document analysis helped with evidence paraphrasing (it's based on the sentence expansion strategy from the Writing Revolution).
How do you modify the complexity of DBQs to help students be successful?
