I wonder if anyone has used the new 3 Reads Tool for reading the graphic biographies? I wonder how the class went for you? What suggestions do you have to make it great?

Hi Kristin Rimal ! I have used this tool before! I try to use at least 1 graphic bio per unit and use this tool alongside it.
We do the "observe" part together as a class. I zoom into the graphic bio on the smart board and we do some initial skimming of images, text, and design choices. We jot down the observations together as a class.
The read/understand part is done together in small groups of 4 students. And then I have students work on the connect portion independently. I rotate around the room as parts 2 & 3 are happening and give verbal time prompts to move the class along. We share answers to parts 2 and 3 at the end of the period.
I sometimes assign the second page for homework. Other times, I omit that page.
It sounds like the flow of this class works well. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Agreed with you on liking this progression Kristin Rimal . I'm wondering if any of you use the Introduction on how to read comics first? I've been looking at using it on Monday along with the tool and introducing graphic biographies. I sort of wish there was a slide version.
Funny you ask this this week Meaghan Mihalic ! I will be teaching this lesson very soon. I use the Introduction on how to read comics prior to our first graphic bio. It is really nice to break down the observe, understand, connect process prior to rolling out the protocol via the three close reads for graphic bios worksheet.
I know you mentioned wanting a slide version, but have found that even on slides, it does not zoom in close enough. I typically use this pdf and zoom in on the smart board. Some students will naturally want to zoom in on their own computer screens. Either way, it is nice to zoom in and out on the board to go through the process with the class.
Did you end up using this resource?
