Previously, I have generalized "communities" as states (which my students have conflated with States) or, more loosely, the "political" theme.
This year, especially with the larger groups of emerging English Language Learners in my classes, I wanted to reframe the frame. By tapping into what they know from their US history classes, students are finally making meaningful connections to the types of communities.....or at least getting a close approximation of the term to similar states. These examples are what students offered as examples to connect US history (purple-ish color) and some of the Afroeurasian communities (blue color). I summarized the defined terms into a very shorthand definition (fuchsia color)
I'm hoping to add images to make this closer to a Frayer model, then will "poster-fy" this and share my pic or files. Any ideas for simple image that represent each of these communities?
