New Periodization Scheme for Unit 3

Adam Esrig

This is a post for Origins veterans and newbies alike.

Origins Era 3 was such a beast --- it felt like it took up the whole first semester and we just covered a mountain of material. I was very pleased to see the OER powers that be breaking Unit 3 up into 2 - Unit 3 (Agrarian Societies) and Unit 4 (Empire and Belief Systems).

We're about to jump into this new periodization scheme - (Lance Sum Teressa Forquignon John Gennaoui ) I thought I'd throw it to the whole community (and in particular some Origins veterans like Erin Cunningham  and Carla Geovanis ) :
- How has the new periodization impacted your scope and sequence, if at all?

- What challenges have you encountered with the new periodization? Do you see this impacting student engagement?”

I'll be sure to also check-in as we're just about to jump in at the beginning of next month.

Thanks for starting this discussion Adam Esrig . The new Units 3-4 split up the old Era 3 where I was splitting them so it hasn't done much to change my pacing for this part of the year. I do think it has been better for me and my students to formally separate Era 3 into the 2 units. The way it was previously set up had us juggling a lot of concepts--farming, agrarian societies, belief systems, empires--all at once whereas now we can have the agrarian societies as context to the growth of belief systems and empires.

I was recently looking at my yearly calendar and I think the bigger changes to scope and sequence for me will come with Unit 6... Sweat

I'm facing the challenge of many prior resources are now not available. I mix OER with TCI and other sources because I've made my own World History Through Food class and I'm desperately looking for some of the mapping activities and a few others that don't seem available anymore. Anyone know if there's some secret spot I'm just not seeing? thx
