I stumbled upon this really cool channel that digitally enhances old footage. The video linked has some awesome footage of people from all over the world timestamped so you can jump around from France to Spain...Jerusalem to Egypt...Japan. Lots of cool quick connections to AP World stuff. I am already well into the time period but I could see this being a great intro to the 1900s activity.
Maybe have the kids watch the footage and see how many connections to previous AP World details they can find? Some would be really easy (glimpses of steam engines) but some pass by pretty quick (looks like some colonial soldiers in Mozambique).
On top of everything else, I think it is just really neat to see people in from the era just "being people". I struggle with sourcing and sometimes I think it is hard to get kids to even imagine that someone from the 1800s or 1600s could ever think or act like kids today do. The video really shows that - people joking around, having a snowball fight, shopping at the market. It's neat.
