Making Claims Worksheets

I love the Making Claims Worksheets. In my school district, the History department spends a lot of time teaching students to write 5 paragraph essays and work on their writing skills. The first area I always address is writing a thesis statement, which can challenge my students. The Making Claims worksheet allows me to start with making claims that are thesis statements, but for some reason, the verbiage for my student is less intimidating.     I haven't; it sounds familiar so I may have done it in the past, but not this year. I will have to find it and give it a try. I remember being a baby teacher and having no idea how to teach students to write thesis statements, and I think the Making Claims worksheet would have been very helpful back then.

    Same here! Having some structure around the process makes it so much easier to instruct.

    I also like the claim testing activities that come with cards (like this one for imperialism). Last year, I used this procedure that involved writing their supporting/refuting statements on the board for some accountability. It ended up being a bit of a debate which was great because it meant they had to refine their arguments and look for more evidence to be "right".
