Response to imperialism: Africa

As I continue to revamp my teaching materials, I like sharing here & finding out what everyone is doing with the blending the CED with the OER resources.  Here's my Nearpod  and associated guided notes. I used the materials from 6.2 Colonialism & Response but I separate the material into the two main geographic regions.

The graphic bios are a huge hit with my students. Working with a microhistory (albeit, of a major character in this unit) has really helped my students see themselves in the curriculum, given them a new avenue to read history, and are fantastic one-pagers.  Have you incorporated these into your AP classes? How have your students responded to them?

    

  •  , I have a few of the graphic biographies in my class and they are usually received well. We like to take them apart and draw conclusions on what this microhistory can tell us about the patterns of history or as part of this unit in particular. 

    I have not had my students read from this collection, however. What are your students doing with them? I do like using them later in the year since they have seen many historical patterns by this point in the year.

  •  I don't teach AP World History but this activity you created using Nearpod is fantastic! Maybe I can create one following your leading guidance.

    I do use graphic biographies and my students responded very positively. I think that there are several explanations for the success: they are visually appealing, they are concise but informative, and they are entertaining to read. Graphic biographies teach students that personal stories are part of the narrative of history but using a different scale of analysis, and that is not a minor thing because it gives visibility to people that otherwise would remain invisible.

  • I have struggled using Graphic Bios in the past... how do you get your students to dive deeper into the graphics? Mine are notorious for being very surface-level.
