Video Lessons

Hi everyone! I am struggling to get my creative juices flowing again--I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on how to watch videos in class and make use of the guiding questions/prompts without doing a worksheet or EdPuzzle. Since it's the beginning of the year, I am reluctant to dive too quickly into discussion-based activities as I have struggled with getting students to interact and speak up in the past. All suggestions are appreciated!!

This is my view on videos....long stream of consciousness coming.

    1. I keep my video's short.   I think 3 minutes is the sweet spot but rarely go over 8.

    2. Since they are short I watch them twice.

    3. First time we literally just watch.  No notes.

    4. After the first time through, I will pose some sort of comprehension question (What is the Odyssey?   Describe the Mesopotamians., something like that).

    5. I will often post 4 words that I think MUST BE IN THE ANSWER.   A lot of times I will give the kids the first letter of the words to try to get them to guess.

    6. We will write an answer using those words.   I write one while they are writing one and we compare.

    7. We will watch a second time and I ask them to generate a list of Proper Nouns, Specific Vocabulary, and numbers presented in he video.   The list usually hits 10-20.

    8.  I then ask them to make three(ish) claims using those words. We use the BHP claims definition (something you believe to be true) and each claim must use two of their words from list.

    9. I then ask 3-4 questions that are more analytical and ask them to use their words to answer them.  Often times, the claims they generated mostly (kinda) answer them.   It becomes and exercise in editing as much as writing.
