Imperialism to WWI

Does anyone have any fun segues to go from Imperialism to WWI? I have been out of the classroom so much this last month that I am now having a difficult time finding ways to connect these topics in a meaningful way.

  • I’m not sure this meets the threshold for fun, but I like having students do a CCOT activity to transition from the long nineteenth century to WWI. We make it a small group activity with marker boards and sticky notes. This is one of the first activities in our second semester, so it’s useful to discuss periodization and set up a segue into the MAIN causes of WWI. 

  • Hi, I use the concept of ACCUMULATION to discuss this era. We discussed how accumulated anything can represent power dynamism e.g. museums, banks, big data and so on. World wars are the "platform of imperial accumulation clash".
