Cartoon Drawings Success

This is a bit of a throwback to earlier in the year.  I forgot I had taken pictures of some impressive work by students.  After examining some documents on Women's Suffrage in Britain(Industrial Revolution - World War I) I gave students blank comic strips with guidance.  My supervisor ordered me one of those big class boxes of colored pencils and the students were surprisingly very excited to use them. Students were able to demonstrate on an understanding of the material in a "fun" and creative way.  I'm just thinking about when I should do this next. Anyone else have success with student-created comics?  Always looking for new ideas.

    Todd Nussen I asked my students to create a mini book for the unit on Expansion & Interconnection in Big History. The format is a little different than yours but after watching the video Julianne Horowitzposted, it follows the category. 

    I love this year's final products. Here are some pics and a copy of the rubric I used the grade this work.

    Nice examples Laura!  Smart topic to pick.  I've really enjoyed incorporating minibooks into my courses and I'm always trying to think of a unit where they work well as an informal assessment.  Expansion and interconnection is a huge unit that covers so many places and events, I think I'm going to give it a shot this year.  Thanks for the idea.

    Did I hear mini-book??? Thanks for sharing that beautiful student example Laura Massa . Your student (and you!) should be so proud of it. 

    It was also helpful for me to see your rubric. I have been using a very simple rubric for mini-books (like this one that goes section by section of the book and is easy to stick in the books when I hand them back) but I want to incorporate some presentation elements to encourage students to take their time with their work so sloppiness doesn't detract from good ideas. I always tell my students that World History isn't art class so I won't grade their artwork but I do think a project should be professionally presented.
