Teaching with Graphic Histories // February 2024

OERR Project graphic biographies are small stories that challenge big historical narratives. Using the tools provided such as Three Close Reads for Graphic Biographies and the 3CR for Graphic Biographies tool help students to develop new literacy skills as they learn to decode these graphic histories.

Check out some of the resources available and learn how teachers use graphic histories in their classes.

So, what is your favorite way to use graphic histories? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm just here to say that I really like the new Graphic Biographies tool! I love that the tool follows the Three Reads procedure and asks students to connect the microhistories to what they're learning. Too often world history lives in the "big picture realm" so zooming in is a nice change of pace.

Today my students learned about Sorqoqtani Beki, an influential figure whose story they might not have otherwise heard about. I think seeing her  is impactful and accessible for students who might otherwise be turned off by an entirely text-based story providing the same information.

I also love the 3CR for Graphic Biographies! My favorite is the "To Be Continued" section on the back. My students really like the creativity of that part of the tool.

Thank you for the 3 Close Reads for Graphic biographies!  I wasn't sure how to begin with them and I think that they are great!
