Teaching Geography

We are rolling out Pre-AP World History at my school this Fall. The first unit is geography and I would love to incorporate as many OER materials as possible.

Which OER materials do you use to teach geography?

Tyrone Shaw I use the map activities that Kathy Hays mentioned. If you want to introduce another type of experience I use Esri Geo Inquiries for History that Rachel Hansen  recommended.

A cool activity I do with my students is to solve the map puzzle of the world. To implement this activity you will have to print 136 maps (I also laminated them). It is a cool group activity and students love it. This is the final map and some pictures.

Laura Massa this is a really great activity! I'm going to use this on the first day of my geography elective. Thank you for sharing this. My sections this year all have about 15 students - do you think that's too many cooks in the kitchen? I'm wondering about also using it in my classes.

Meaghan Mihalic not at all. I've done it with 18 students.

I was also wondering about the optimal number of students. I have classes of 30 - maybe I would need to split them up into two groups? I wonder if we could make it a friendly competition to see who could assemble their map first?

Anne Koschmider a competition could work. In any case there are 136 pieces to place and it takes time to figure it out.
