Welcome AP World History Teachers!

Katie Raby

Welcome to the AP World History community! My name is Katie Raby, and I’m thrilled to begin my 10th year of teaching AP World History here in Georgia.

One of my favorite activities to kick off the year is what I call the "Soup, Salad, Sandwich" argumentation practice. On the first day, I engage students in a fun and interactive debate where they must classify different foods as a soup, salad, or sandwich. This activity not only breaks the ice but also introduces them to the essentials of constructing a strong argument, supporting their claims with evidence, and considering different perspectives.

Here are the slides I use if you want to preview the activity.

If you like it, here is a link to the Canva presentation!

Love this, Katie Raby ! I’ve done something along the same lines to introduce claims and evidence a few weeks into the term, but I bet this is a great start-of-school activity too. It’s fun to see the lively debate fire up during this activity!

I’ll add the Google slide deck I use if it’s of use to anyone: docs.google.com/.../edit
