Other apps/websites you recommend pairing with BHP?

Hi Everyone,

Do any of you recommend other online tools/apps/resources to pair with BHP? I went on Edpuzzle and saw a lot of BHP videos posted there so I know several teachers must use that, but which other ones have you found compliment the course well?

Also, I am a middle school teacher using BHP. I see most teachers using it are teaching high school. Is there a middle school tips discussion thread or something along those lines that I should link up with?

Thank you!

Amara

    Hi Amara Lauren !

Many teachers use BHP in HS, but there are also lots who use the curriculum in MS and even younger. It is so adaptable.

I'm going to tag a couple of people who are either MS teachers or who have tons of good resources for pairing with BHP.

Will you come back and share your favorite ideas? I would love to hear them.

Hi Amara Lauren ! I also teach BHP to middle schoolers - 6th grade to be exact. What I find to be most helpful is taking existing activities and working to scaffold them down. For example, I might slightly adjust the directions, add sentence starter suggestions, or change some of the writing to be an outline as opposed to a full-blown essay. In terms of other sources, I do use some activities from DIG (formerly SHEG) such as the lunchroom fight. I know Khan Academy also has all of the BHP content on their site, and one thing I like is they have the practice set questions that you can use.

    Hi Meaghan,

Thank you for the tips on how to scale back some of the activities for middle schoolers. Good to know about Khan Academy BHP content and practice questions. My students use Khan Academy for math, so it's an easy one to add. Thanks!

I've never heard of SHEG/DIG. Is it a good site for SS? Thanks!

Sure thing! If you ever have questions about a specific activity or assignment, ask away! Yes, SHEG (Stanford History Education Group) is excellent. There is a big focus on reading and thinking like a historian which aligns nicely with Claim Testing. There are also a lot of activities about Civic Online Reasoning, which are so relevant. I've used some of those and also worked with the 7th and 8th grade history teachers to sort of spread those lessons throughout the middle school curriculum.
