How do you use maps in your classroom?

Let’s talk about maps!!! We have some cool maps in OER Project courses (that have superzoom capabilities). How do you use maps with your students and why do you use them that way? Would love to hear about strategies and the way you incorporate maps into your classrooms!

Angela Lee MapMaker has a new version that allows users to zoom in and out, adding layers of information. They are releasing new versions every month. It was presented at the APHG reading session in Cincinnati.

That is super cool! I could explore for hours on this, but unfortunately I don't have time to do so with school just starting for us this week.

Thanks for sharing this new resource, Laura Massa

The West Wing clip is a favorite for me as well! Showing the Mercator projection on a head is good for a laugh too.

Multiple modalities all the way. Sometimes I have students use the online maps found here in the OER suite - this may mean having students do the OER activities as written (i.e. Mapping Regional Trade Networks).

Other times, I'll pull out the paper maps and atlases and have students make geographical observations using those.  It's really about practice, consistency and building routines. Students often walk in without much of an idea of world geography so my philosophy tends to be that the more exposure to geographical concepts and the more time just spent observing geographical features and spatial relationships, the better.
