What instructional practices have worked well in the past to engage your students in note taking.

For example, I saw a great presentation at the AVID conference about encouraging students to be creative with their notes.  A student used their notes as a canvas to create original little pieces of art that connected to their notes.  I love that idea! Now, everyone is not interested in art the same way, but what other ways have you used to engage your students in note taking?

I use a protocol called CEC notes.  I didn't make it up, and can't even tell you where it comes from.  But Connect, Extend, Challenge is what it stands for, and the way students write in each column helps them see the difference and connection between the facts and their thoughts and opinions. By the way, I use this with 9th graders.

I think this comes from Project Zero Bryan Dibble . It's a great resource, and it also connected pretty well to the third read in Three Close Reads. I can see the similarity in the prompts being helpful to students!
