What is your "go to" type of assignment when you have a substitute?

I am out a LOT this year for various trainings, presentations, etc. 

What is your "go to" type of assignment on days when you aren't in the classroom?

What matters:

1. Easy for students to understand

2. Less of a chance of cheating

What doesn't matter:

1. Time (to an extent)- 90 block

2. Number of copies needed

  • Hi  ! Which course(s) are you teaching? I lean on a couple of nearly-cheat-proof options:

    • Edpuzzle is my biggest go-to when I'm absent.  Many of the OER videos are already loaded in there with the questions embedded. If I need to extend the assignment I'll tack on a paper support-extend-challenge worksheet to follow the video.
    • Sketch-notes and one-pagers are also great for engaging kids and preventing duplication of work, because these activities really call for individuality.  I'd pair sketch-notes with a reading or a video, while I'd assign a one-pager for a research task or for a review of a topic, unit, individual in history, etc.

    AP World History is the one I'm trying to find assignments for. I didn't realize Edpuzzle had the OER videos on there. I'll have the check it out!

    My law class is all upperclassmen and generally runs itself (thankfully!)

    Hi  , this is a great question and I'm actually running into this issue due to something unexpected next week. I often will have them practice skills: writing SAQs, MCQ on AP Classroom (especially since it's a digital exam this year I'm doing more of that), or even doing sourcing work using a HAPPY chart on their own for 1-2 sources. Later in the year, I will have them work on more review charts where they go through all of their notes (class and homework notes). Depending on the chart, sometimes they're in preassigned groups or it's independent. Here is an example of a chart I use. Hope this helps!

    OER Project doesn't load them, but teachers do, and I can usually find a teacher copy with the OER questions embedded, thanks to people who leave them public Slight smile

  • I have an assignment sitting in a folder in case of emergency. It's on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The students explore them, map their locations, find commonalities among them and discuss what each says about the people who created them. Then it is set up to have a rousing discussion regarding which is the most significant. If a creature was visiting from another universe, which would best tell the story of our humanity?
