Analysis in Student Writing

Anne Koschmider

We just did our first structured writing task (not counting DBQ 0) using Claim Testing - The Islamic World. Students seemed to follow along pretty well with their ability to pull evidence to support the statements on their claim cards. However, when it was time to craft a 1-2 paragraph mini-essay based on the groundwork we laid together, I noticed that several students had trouble integrating analysis and reasoning into their writing.

I’m wondering, how do you coach students to elevate their writing with more sophisticated reasoning?

Thanks for starting this Anne Koschmider and I definitely understand the struggle. Do you have them use a specific structure like ACE in the body paragraphs? When I have them do that it makes it a bit easier. I've also tried giving them sentence starters like "This is important because" or "This relates to the claim that .... because". Adding in Laura Massa to weigh in

I also utilize the ACE method. When teaching longer essays, such as the LEQ, I tell them we need to ACEEE. This reminds them that the analysis should be longer in an essay than it would be in a typical SAQ.

I do something similar Katie Raby . What is each E of the ACEEE? I've done it more as ACE1E2CE1E2CE1E2 throughout for my essays. E1 is analyzing the evidence they provided and then E2 is tying that analysis back to the thesis.

    E1: This means/shows...

    E2: This is important because...

E3: This supports the idea that (claim) ...

I have them repeat it for each claim in the body paragraph. they can mix up the order, but those ideas should be there.

Got it thanks! I usually combine your E1 and E2 as my E1.
