Rolling out Graphic Biographies!

I used the Three Close Reads for Graphic Biographies introduction today in class! By the end of my second class, students were enthusiastically calling Trevor Getz Mr. T! Laughing They took some notes on key definitions, and many took the suggestion to use illustrations or examples to bring the ideas to life. Then, we used two graphic biographies, and in table groups, they analyzed and determined the path to reading them.

Meaghan Mihalic This is impressive work done by your young students! It didn’t occur to me to ask them to illustrate the steps for reading a graphic biography. Did you notice that introducing the Three Close Reads skills helped students better understand and interpret the graphic biographies in context? Did you organize a debrief session with all the groups?

Laura Massa yes, we talked through all steps, ands they were eager to share all of the visual cues thwy noticed. The main thing I emphasized is that read one is what takes the longest. This is different than with 3CRs for a nonfiction article.
