Using Student Feedback to Foster Accountability

Laura Massa
Laura Massa 5 months ago

January marks the beginning of a new year and another academic semester. I am planning to give my students a survey to reflect upon their performance and work ethic. I took the graphic portion from other colleagues in this community (it was from Todd Nussen if I am not mistaken). Here is mine. Do you give students an instance to reflect and reset their commitment to your course?  Bryan Dibble Todd Nussen Tyrone Shaw Melissa Nowotarski

Laura Massa , I love the idea of a reset and refocus at the start of the semester. Could you change the settings on the form you linked so we can see what you've created?

Laura Massa , how do you follow up with students after they take the survey?

It seems to be set so that anyone at your school can view it but not people outside your organization.

Erin Cunningham  I just made it available to people outside my school. Sorry for that.

It works now! Thanks for sharing. I have used an end of semester reflection in the past and I want to merge some of your questions with mine. I especially like the levels of engagement graphic.

Nice work Laura.  Yes, I do remember sharing that a while ago.  I actually have it up in my classroom (my chairperson shared a bunch of copies for anyone who wanted one).  It becomes a helpful reference for what students should be aiming to do and a reminder for day dreaming students who might stumble upon it.  Hadn't thought about using it in a survey, but I love the idea!

John Vidoli I usually give the survey at the beginning of the second semester, after students receive their semester grades, including the semester exam. While I do not return the assessment, I go over it with them, offering a debrief and addressing any questions they may have.

The survey is a valuable tool for gaining insight into how students perceive their own work and for encouraging self-reflection. In my experience, the first semester often serves as a wake-up call—students with lower grades become more aware of the need for change and develop a more consistent work ethic. This is also the time of year when we, as teachers, recommend (or do not recommend) students for higher-level courses such as Honors or AP.

An additional benefit is that freshmen begin to realize that their grades now count toward their school transcript, reinforcing the importance of their academic performance.

Here is a copy of our form we give to students.  We're all thinking alike on this issue!
