Respondus LockDown Browser

Does anyone use the Respondus LockDown Browser with your school's/district's LMS? What is your experience with it? I love using it with AP Classroom as it gives me a better gauge of students' performance when they are not in class under my supervision. My school will pilot it through our Canvas and I wonder if anyone else uses it and what your experience is.

Tyrone Shaw , I've used it in conjunction with Formative and the only issue I've had is that when you use it on medium or high security, the kids have to close all of their tabs before it'll work. They get a warning screen that isn't written in a very kid-friendly way telling them that they need to close tabs before the assignment will open (I learned the hard way when I used it on a sub day...). But other than that, I find it useful. I also use the lockdown browser with Google Forms/Classroom.

I agree that it's helpful for seeing what kids actually know and not what their Google searches tell them Slight smile

Thanks for the feedback ERIN CUNNINGHAM. I too am excited because my students have come to rely heavily on Googling and Chat-GPT whenever they are not sitting in front of me in the classroom. So this will be a nice way of lessening that effect even though I know I will not be able to circumvent it entirely. I just need them to be able to do some intellectual heavy lifting outside of the classroom and this is a way that I feel I can hold them accountable to that.

Totally agree! There'll never be a total block but at least creating more obstacles might result in more kids deciding they might as well just do the work themselves.

I forwarded this idea to the tech department, and they haven't been able to give me an answer whether or not they can install it on the chromebooks.  Is your school 1 to 1 on school managed devices?  Ours is not, so I really have no control at all, except at school when I can check out the chrome cart.    What about the AP Classroom Lockdown functionality?

Angela Lee , our school is 1:1 on managed devices so the Lockdown Browser is preinstalled on all of the Chromebooks.

The CollegeBoard uses the Respondus Lockdown browser for testing and in AP Classroom so its the same app. Although I don't think you have to have it downloaded in order to use it in conjunction with AP stuff. You just use it within the browser.

Just found out that they've downloaded for all the chromebooks for the chrome cart, so I'm good to go!  Will have to try it out with our next assessment.

LockDown Browser for AP Classroom is different from LockDown Browser that would go through your schools LMS. If your school do not license LockDown Browser through your LMS itself, you do not have access to it.
