How can I use AI to catch new students up fast? (Demo with Notebook LM)

Have you ever gotten a new student in class 1.5 weeks into the school year? It's always a challenge to catch them up without missing a beat. You may have heard of Notebook LM's ability to make a podcast in minutes from any source you upload. Did you know that Notebook LM can now make videos?

Check out this demo from the OER Project team showing how you can use our unit materials to make a student-friendly video for those inevitable schedule switches, ads, or changes! A bonus feature? Share the video with your students and they can open a chat to ask follow-up questions.

What do you think? Would you use this feature of Notebook LM with your students? What other ways could you imagine using this tool?

Thanks for this, Becca Horowitz ! This looks like an interesting option for review and differentiation.

Becca Horowitz I have been trying to use Notebook LM's video function to provide students with some context about the role of women in the Mongol Empire to accompany the Sorqoqtani Beki graphic biography. Unfortunately, I keep getting an error that the video cannot be created. If anyone has suggestions, I am all ears!

Anne Koschmider Oh man! I hit my limit of free daily videos when I was first trying it out. Maybe try again on another day? Or see check the support page? Generate Video Overviews in NotebookLM - NotebookLM Help

I'm a homeschool teacher, but one of my student's is teaching a class to younger kids. We uploaded some Google Slides that the student had made and had Notebook make a video with the content. It was pretty good!  I wonder if it has a harder time with getting info from graphics though. Maybe try uploading text documents that cover the material you want to be in the video?

Kendra Nielsen thanks for the suggestion! And I'm glad to hear that LM is useful in a homeschool setting. I tried a couple of text excerpts and web links to text. I think I'll have to keep playing with it.

Becca Horowitz , thanks for posting this. I've been using NotebookLM to create material for students -- review sheets, audio, and now video. It's truly amazing. I've even shared it with a student. He's found it helpful to find information in the texts. (I have him upload the files on his own.)

I really want to share this with all my students. Google has just given the option of adding it to Google Classroom. (You can set it up so it uses all the assignments/material posted in a Topic.)

My concern/fear is that the new features -- the reports in particular -- will just make it too easy for some students have NotebookLM generate any writing assignment.

Has anyone made NotebookLM available to their students? How did it go? How did you introduce it?
