History on Screen: Nailed It… or Missed the Mark?

It's time for Rotten Tomatoes: History Edition! Movies and TV shows shape how a lot of people first encounter history—for better or worse.

What’s the best or worst depiction of a historical event you’ve seen on screen? Maybe it was surprisingly accurate, sparked great classroom conversations, or made you cringe because of what it left out or got wrong.

What worked? What didn’t? And have you ever used (or avoided) a film or clip because of how it handled the history?

My next door teacher neighbor teaches a history through film course. We were just reflecting on how popular Pearl Harbor was upon its release, with some of our younger staff members having watched the entire film in their high school history courses. However, this one gets a no from me - definitely more about the love story than the history!

I use a clip from Ghandi with And Then Gandhi Came: Nationalism, Revolution, and Sovereignty , but I am not sure I would show the whole film.

I love Gandhi and will often show clips. I have also been a bit head-in-the-sand about that and Hotel Rwanda, another favorite. I appreciate having a more realistic recommendation, @ericschulz
