Just used the Economic Systems Simulation and it went well.  I was able to pick up cheap holiday Kisses as Valentine kisses are now on the shelves! After the activity, the students Close Read    the Rise of the Proletariat  My measure of success was the Warm up for today.  Excellent answers and much better than last year!

    Hi Janet,

How did you determine what number of kisses made up the lower, middle and upper ranges that would be the "social classes."

    I am thinking:

    1-3 Kisses - Lower

    4-6 Kisses - Middle

    7+ Kisses- Upper

I am interested to know how you implemented this.

    Thanks!

Hi Emma Auer  Great question!  I have classes of 34 students. In the first round I gave every student 1 kiss, and then 4 students got 7 total.  I stopped play after about 4 minutes. I used the rating you did.  I had 22 lower, 7 middle and 5 upper after the first round.  I then went around stating "government redistribution of resources," and took kisses from the middle and upper and redistributed factors of production so that all students had 2 kisses at the start of round 2. Student (that chose to) played about 2 minutes.  At the end of round 2 I had a few more middle class but NO Upper. (data was very close across three class periods)  Hope that helped!  Let me know if you want more information!

Yay! I am so glad this worked well! I had a student teacher do this in my class many years back now and it worked great with general education students as well. This is usually when we get into the discussion of how you really cannot have freedom and equality in the strictest sense at the same time. It makes for a great conversation with students. Plus, the kids love the extra treat for the day, haha!

Hi Janet Mann  - I'm glad that this went well, and thank you Jessica Lindenmeier for sharing what resonated with your students. I did not have a chance to use it last week when we did an introduction to the economics to industrialization. as a sandwich module class day between 1 class day (60 minutes) for : Origins of the Industrial Revolution combined with a "Scale of an Industrial Revolution" scavenger hunt using the questions from the "Read 2 Understanding Content" questions, and one final class day (60 min) Jigsaw Reading of the "Japan's Industrial Revolution" article and "Egypt's Industrial Revolution". We then do the "Comparison: Egypt and Japan Activity." in a following class.

However, I am planning on circling back next week as a review activity. Emma Auer  - thank you for your question on how to best divide the chocolate - I can never do the math!

Looking forward to seeing how others are using this in their classroom!
