Cold War- Beyond USSR and USA

I've noticed that when teaching the Cold War, my students sometimes struggle to see it as more than just a standoff between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. How do you cover the perspectives of other countries caught in the conflict?  What OER articles or activities do you rely on help students see the bigger picture?

This is something I’ve been focusing more over the past 2 years especially since in US History they cover it more like this. I try to tie it more with decolonization and say as certain countries are becoming independent, they’re being influenced by both the US and USSR to join their side in the conflict. I’ve also done more work on the Non Alignment Movement. There’s a good DBQ on this in the AMSCO Review book for AP World.

Thanks so much for sharing this! I really like the way you’re tying it into decolonization—that’s such a natural connection and helps students see the global impact of the Cold War beyond just the US and USSR. I’ll definitely check out that DBQ in the AMSCO Review book—appreciate the recommendation Slight smile
