Summative Order

Hi all,

Wondering how closely you follow the summatives that are suggested by OER? I went in order last year with the Unit 1 LEQ, and I found it to be a little tough for kids who hadn't spent a ton of time writing to do the full thing at the beginning of the year (I teach 9th grade AP World, so). I'm thinking of starting with an SAQ to make it a little easier for them -- but in general was wondering how people order their summatives.

I also like how there are so many DBQs for every unit -- but want to create a summative that's specifically about HIPPing (HAPPYing?) a document before I have them write actual DBQs. Last year, my kids didn't really get analysis points for their AP tests, and I want to make sure that I'm scaffolding correctly so that they can this year!

You are right - starting the year with an LEQ is rough!  I see SAQs as the basic building blocks for an essay, so I focus on those a lot in my first quarter.  I do give an LEQ early on, but it’s in their study groups, each student writes one paragraph in support of the thesis they derive together as a way to help scaffolding for the larger task and that is the summative for Unit 0/1 for me.

9th graders for APWHM is a challenge! I have 9th graders for WH (not AP) and we work on that sourcing skill all year, and as SAQ type of questions.  Perhaps for a summative early on you can pull together 2-3 docs that have conflicting stances and just have them HIPP/HAPP them.
