Tokugawa Japan

My students had some fun with a new activity today. One student took on the role of shogun with the task of deciding whether or not Tokugawa Japan should open up to foreign trade or pursue a course of isolationism. The other students worked in groups to take on roles and present elevator pitches supporting or opposing Japan's engagement in foreign trade.

Here are the role cards I provided to students.

If you try it out, let me know how it goes!

I really like this! Do you maybe know of any primary sources that I could incorporate with this when I try it?

Now you've got me thinking about adding primary sources for each viewpoint. That might require some detective work, but I do think it would add value to the role cards. Thanks for the inspiration!
